Dù Theatre was founded in 2004 with the aim to create and produce new and exciting works. Indeed, for the past 18 years, the company has brought a fresh wave of ideas to Malta’s stages. Dù’s strong point is in the diversity of its members, who play multiple roles, thus enabling a harmonious amalgamation of ideas to ultimately complement one another, making this combination of varied experiences the key to an enhanced theatrical process.
Performing with an open mind, a finger on the international pulse, while keeping its own cultural roots, is how Dù does theatre. It performs, effects, transacts, brings about, works at, works out, provides and prepares – which is the meaning of Dù – literally a Maltese phonetic version of its English counterpart ‘do’ and what its members are really about - they just Dù it.
Throughout the years, Dù ventured in diverse collaborations with actors, musicians, stage designers, videographers, photographers and artists. Collaboration in theatre is the ultimate test of placing one’s ego aside in order to work jointly towards a common idea. Creative collaborations resulted in powerful and good learning experiences for Dù.
One of the core values for Dù Theatre is mutual respect. In all collaborations, the work belongs to those involved, and that all involved with the creation of the piece will benefit from the exposure garnered when it is performed. This enables the group to confront ideas, push boundaries and take on new challenges with every project that is brought to life.
The group is particularly known for devising original work, placing a strong focus on its native languages and presenting projects in a fresh and innovative way. Projects vary from visual and physical works, re-interpretations of the classics, to award winning plays penned by the group’s artistic director. Dù’s passion transpires through the work and is perceived by audiences, who have learned to expect fresh, engaging performances that present things in ways that challenge what they are accustomed to.
